We’re rounded up five cool things happening this week in Dublin for Free!

I hope you’re over the midweek hump, cause you are in for a treat this weekend with three long running events kicking off. I had the best dinner in D’Olier Street this weekend. I also topped this off with a firework display for Halloween and I went to Dublin by Night on Northside!

Dublin Gallery Weekend

Friday, 10 November - Sunday, 12 November - Free - 10 Different Galleries

This brand new event is one that you will want to check out. Free (as always) and open to all, this event celebrate Dublin’s contemporary art scene, showcasing the capital’s vibrant galleries through exhibitions, guided tours & programmed events.

A wide array of solo shows and themed group exhibitions featuring Irish and international artists will be available for visitors to experience. Moreover, they will have the opportunity to join guided tours led by curators, artists and gallerists to learn more about the artworks.

Dublin Book Festival

Wednesday, 8 Nov - Sunday, 12 Nov - Free - The Printworks, Dublin Castle

Dublin Book Festival is back, and it’s one of my favourites. You will find some of the best writers, illustrators and publishers in the country.

The festival will have over sixty events in the 5 day run. The majoriy will be in the Printworks but also in Dublin City Libraries, the National Library of Ireland, the Royal Irish Academy, The National Botanic Gardens and many more spots across the city.

From engaging panel discussions, book launches and walking tours to creative workshops and professional development events – it has something for everyone!

Most of the events are completely free! There's also a dedicated family and schools programme showcasing contemporary fiction, history, poetry and non-fiction.

The History of Art in Ireland Tour

Saturday, 11 November 2023 - 11am - National Museum of Ireland

.Take part in this tour and broaden your knowledge of art history with the National Museum of Ireland's archaeology collection. Discover the evolution of art in the country from the Stone Age to Early Medieval Ireland.

View megalithic structures from the Stone Age, the intricate gold craftsmanship of Bronze Age pieces like lunulae and sun discs, and the enduring influence of the Iron Age style, La Tène, in Early Medieval objects such as the Ardagh Chalice and the 'Tara' Brooch.

There is no booking required, simply turn up and meet in the reception. It’s wheelchair accessible and kids over 8 are also very welcome.

Film Screening: Marie Menken: Film Poet and Warhol Superstar

Saturday, 11 November 2023 - 1pm - Free - Hugh Lane Gallery

Join us for a screening of the 2006 documentary Notes on Marie Menken (97 minutes), followed by a Q&A session with programme curator Vivienne Dick.

The film follows the fascinating story of the pioneering artist Marie Menken (1909-1970) and her influence on New York's underground experimental filmmakers of the 1940s to the 1960s, such as Andy Warhol, Jonas Mekas, Stan Brakhage, Kenneth Anger and Gerard Malanga. Eventually, Marie became a Warhol Superstar.

Don't miss this unique opportunity for you learn about the life of Marie Menken with the Hugh Lane gallery and then take a trip around the rest of the exhibitions.

Science Week

Sunday 12th Nov - Sunday 19th Nov - Free - Various Locations

Science week 2023 asks one question - “what does it mean to be human in today’s world, and how the decisions we make today, will impact humans of the future”

Science week has events every day starting from Sunday until next Sunday. These events involve industry, colleges, schools, libraries, teachers, researchers and students throughout Ireland. Science Week has a number of regional festivals offering a range of opportunities for the public to engage with STEM in across Ireland.

Some events cross over with the Book Festival in Dublin Castle. So be sure to Discover the Dublin Science Week events now.
