Arbour Hill Cemetery Tour

Every Friday - 11am - FREE

The Military Cemetery holds a profound historical significance as the resting place of 14 leaders executed during the 1916 Easter Rising, including Patrick Pearse, James Connolly, and Major John MacBride. After their execution at Kilmainham Gaol, their remains were respectfully laid to rest in Arbour Hill.

Situated on a terrace of Wicklow granite, the graves lie beneath a low mound within the former prison yard. Enclosed by a limestone wall inscribed with their names in Irish and English, the gravesite stands as a solemn tribute to their sacrifice.

Adjacent to the wall, a plaque commemorates others who perished in 1916. Carefully maintained by the Office of Public Works, this sacred cemetery offers a place for reflection and remembrance, inviting visitors to connect with the stories of these courageous individuals who played a significant role in Ireland's struggle for independence.

This summer the OPW are offering a free tour around the historic graves of those who fought for Ireland’s freedom. I would recommend outdoor clothing and appropriate footwear for this tour.

Alternative Side to Dublin Tour

Walking tour - Saturday 11am - FREE

Discover a different side to Dublin. And find out what is on the alternative side to Dublin!

Ever wonder... what's down there? Well now you can find out all the quirks to the alternative side to Dublin. On a free walking tour that checks out a chocolate factory, fruit market, hidden bar, time house, art gallery and many more unique places.

The tour starts beside The Ambassador Theatre at the top of O Connel Street. The guide will be at the front door from 10.58 to 11.10 before making the way to a chocolate factory!

As with many of the free tours, I like to leave the tour guide a tip as a kind gesture for the 2 hour walk around the side of Dublin you may not have seen before!

Medici Lion, By Siobhán Hapaska

Free - Douglas Hyde Gallery

The Douglas Hyde is excited to showcase a significant solo exhibition featuring the acclaimed Irish-Parsee artist, Siobhán Hapaska. Throughout the last thirty years, Hapaska has crafted original and formally intricate pieces that resist easy categorization.

As a distinctive voice in contemporary sculpture, you consistently challenge traditional notions of form and materials, delving insightfully into themes of conflict, faith, and the human experience. With an extensive international exhibition history, which includes co-representation of Ireland at the 2001 Venice Biennale, Medici Lion marks your inaugural institutional solo exhibition in the Republic, presenting an ambitious collection developed over the past three years.

To start off the tour, meet your tour guide in the Courtyard, near the Merrion Square entrance.

The NGI Visitor Guide is like the bible for details of what to expect on your visit to the Gallery. Every answer you can think of has been fitted into this! You can read the guide here.
