Dublin Festival of History 2023

Monday 25^th September – Sunday 15^th October

Visit, learn and celebrate the great history of Dublin at this year’s Dublin History Festival. Now in its 11^th year, the Dublin History Festival will play host to over 200 FREE events, from talks, tours, exhibitions, films and family friendly events, there is something for everybody. The variety doesn’t stop there, with events online, as Gaeilge, or with Irish Sign Language (ISL) interpretation.

Dublin Festival of History is brought to you by Dublin City Council and organised by Dublin City Libraries, in partnership with Dublin City Council Culture Company.

Drop – in Drawing with Roxana Manouchehri

Sunday 1^st October – Chester Beatty – Free!

Enjoy the relaxed and informal sessions delivered by the amazing artist Roxana Manouchehri at the Chester Beatty Museum. Learn the techniques required to make a wonderful artist including line drawing, shading, perspective and decoration. This is an amazing event, all costs, all materials and learning are free. All you got to do is book, but be quick, as tickets are limited.

BOWN + BACON – HUGH LANE GALLERY

Hugh Lane Gallery – Parnell Square North – Free!

The Hugh Lane Gallery will be home to the amazing work of renowned photographer Jane Bown. Bown’s work became a household name for her black and white photography work using the available light. One of her many subjects was Frances Bacon, a Dublin artist, who became one of the leading artists of his generation.

In 1980, Bown photographed Bacon in his studio in London, where she captured ‘the jackpot picture’. This is one of many wonderful images that Bown was able to capture of Bacon at his 7 Reece Mews studio. Don’t miss this opportunity to see how this amazing artist created his incredible work!

Are you a budding historian?

DCC are looking for up to five historians who would like to spend a year in residence with Dublin City Libraries and Dublin City Council Culture Company, engaging with local communities, conducting research and promoting access to our historical collections, so that everyone in Dublin City has an opportunity to feel a connection to their local history.

Creating Pathways – DEAD

Merrion Square – Friday 29^th – Saturday 20^th – Free!

Come and enjoy this wonderful exhibition reflecting the cultural legacy of the novel ‘Dracula’ and the classic silent film ‘Nosferatu’. Located on Merrion square, this incredible exhibition will play host to virtual reality technology, 3D animations, video projections and many more, bringing fantasy to life.

The innovative work of talented students and graduates of the Creative Pathways programme are responsible for this thrilling concept.

Goethe-Institut has partnered with the Creative Pathways Programme bringing together students and graduates from Ireland and Germany with varying artistic disciplines, including film, drama and sound art. Through their comprehensive work, exploring the German- Irish heritage of ‘Dracula’ and ‘Nosferatu’ they have raised compelling questions regarding life and Death.

Don’t miss this incredible exhibition showcasing collaboration, teamwork, culture, fantasy and innovation.

Sculpture in Context

National Botanic Gardens, - Free Admission!

The beautiful Botanic gardens will play host to an astounding collection of contemporary works by over 120 Irish and International artists.

The Fabulous grounds will cater for over 140 sculptures, from the simple to the intrinsically detailed. Sculptures will be situated beneath the falling leaves of the beautiful autumnal tress throughout the magnificent gardens, as well as throughout the ponds and the Great Palm House with smaller pieces located in the visitor centre.

Visit on Saturday, to explore the outstanding exhibition by the guidance of participating artists, to learn more about Ireland’s largest outdoor and indoor sculpture exhibition.
